PURPOSE: To provide a method for producing an urethano ester, allowing the reaction to proceed in high conversion and selectivity and capable of producing the objective compound in an extremely high yield.
CONSTITUTION: A carboxylate ester of formula I (R1 is 1-6C alkyl, 2-6C alkenyl, 6-12C aryl; R2 is 1-3C alkyl), such as methyl methacrylate, and an N- hydroxyalkyl carbamate ester of formula II (R3 is 2-6C linear or branched alkyl; R4 is methyl, ethyl), such as N-hydroxyethyl carbamate methyl ester are subjected to transesterification in the presence of zinc or zirconium acetylacetone complex as a catalyst at 60-150°C to produce an urethano ester of formula III. Since a chlorine-containing compound is not used as a reaction raw material, troubles (e.g. the corrosion of devices, the treatment of by- produced hydrochloric acid) originating from chlorine are not caused.
