PURPOSE: To increase the brightness of the projection type liquid crystal display element which is mounted with a lens array by creating the ray angle distribution advantageous for the lens array.

CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal light valve 103 integrated with the lens array 104 is inclined with the optical axis and is so disposed that the three elements of the liquid crystal light valve 103, a projecting lens 105 and a projecting screen 106 satisfy the rule of shine proof. Rays 112, 113 are made incident on the lens array by having the angle advantageous for the condensing function of the lens array 104 by this disposition. The quantity of the light transmitted through the apertures of picture elements can be increased in this way.
