To provide a projection zoom lens composed of seven groups and configured so as to have a large zoom ratio while ensuring long back focus and so as to sufficiently suppress various aberrations, such as image face curvature, in the entire zoom area; and to provide a projection type display apparatus incorporating such a projection zoom lens.

The projection zoom lens includes, in order from a magnifying side, the negative first group G1, the positive or negative second group G2, the positive third group G3, the positive fourth group G4, the positive or negative fifth group G5, the positive or negative sixth group G6, and the positive seventh group G7. The reducing side is telecentric. In variable magnification, the first group G1, second group G2, and seventh group G7 are fixed, the third to sixth groups G3 to G6 are moved, and the second group G2 is used for focusing. In addition, the third group G3 includes at least one negative lens. Further, the zoom lens satisfies formulae given below:(1) 2.2<Bf/fw<5.0; and (2) 1.5≤ft/fw, wherein Bf represents back focus on the reducing side, fw represents the focal length of the entire lens system at a wide angle end, and fT is the focal length of the entire lens system at a telephoto end.
