To provide a projector which has excellent moving picture display characteristics and uniform in-plane display characteristics, and has the manufacture cost and the power consumption of which are prevented from getting higher.
The projector includes: a liquid crystal device; a projection optical system; an illuminating device 100 that emits illumination light beam having a sectional shape compressed in a y-axis direction so as to illuminate an entire image forming area with respect to an x-axis direction in the image forming area of the liquid crystal devices 400R, 400G and 400B and illuminate one portion of the image forming area with respect to the y-axis direction; and a rotating prism rotated at a constant speed and scanning the illumination light beam from the illuminating device along the y-axis direction in the image forming area of the liquid crystal device. The projector further comprises an illuminating device driving circuit 710 that temporally controls the light amount of the illumination light beam emitted from the illuminating device so as to reduce an illuminance difference generated by changing the scanning speed of the illumination light beam on the image forming area in the liquid crystal device.
