This propelling machine 10 for the ship includes a propelling machine body 12 for rotating around a rotary axis X extending along the propelling direction of the ship, a suction port 16 arranged on a surface of the propelling machine body 12, discharge ports 18 arranged on the surface of the propelling machine body 12, and flow passages 20a and 20b for connecting the suction port 16 and the discharge ports 18. The suction port 16 is arranged in front in the propelling direction more than the discharge ports 18, the discharge ports 18 are arranged outside in the radial direction from the rotary axis X more than the suction port 16, and the flow passages 20a and 20b are inclined backward in the propelling direction in parts opening in at least the discharge ports 18. The ship is propelled by discharging water sucked from the suction port 16 from the discharge ports 18 by rotation around the rotary axis X of the propelling machine body 12.
