PURPOSE: Melted crude bisphenol A containing water in a more than specified proportion is cooled and a part of it is crystallized out and separated, thus producing high-quality bisphenol A with industrial advantage without use of a large amount of water.
CONSTITUTION: Crude bisphenol A resulting from reaction between phenol and acetone in the presence of an acidic catalyst is heated together with more than 5wt% water, preferably 5W20wt%, the minimum amount necessary for melting point depression, in a vessel equipped with heaters and a stirrer and fused. Then, the mixture is cooled to a little lower temperature than the melting point of the mixture and the removal of heat is controlled so that 50W90wt% of the bisphenol A exists in the melted state in the mixture and the remaining crystallizes out. The crystals are separated by filtration. When necessary, the separated crystals are washed with water and dried at lower than 130°C.
