Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (R is 1-10C straight chain alkyl; A is CH=CH, C≡C; X is H, F).
EXAMPLE: 1-(4'-Cyano-3'-fluorophenyl-2-(5'-pentylpyrimidin-2-yl) ethylene.
USE: A compound for liquid crystal composition. Useful as a liquid crystal material for TN and STN type liquid crystal displays when driven in high speed and high time-sharing driving.
PREPARATION: 2-Methyl-5-alkylpyrimidine of formula 10 is made to react with 4-bromo-3-fluorobenzonitrile in the presence of ZnCl2 according to the reaction equation and the prepared compound of formula 15 is cyanided with Cu(CN)2 in NMP to prepare the compound of formula I (formula 1-a) wherein A is CH=CH and X is H.
