NEW MATERIAL:Quinoxaline derivatives of the formula (X is Br, I, or lower alkyl; R is H, lower alkyl, salt-forming atom, or salt-forming residue).
EXAMPLE: Methyl-2[4-(6-bromo-2-quinoxalyloxy)phenoxy]propionate.
USE: Herbicides having excellent herbicidal effect esp. to Gramineae, by soil treatment or foliar treatment. Scarcely harmful to broad-leaved crops, e.g. cotton, beans, peas, adzuki beans, etc.
PROCESS: For example, the compound obtained by the reaction of 4-halogeno-o- phenylene with L-(+)-tartaric acid di-n-butyl ester is heated under reflux to give 2-chloro-6-halogenoquinoxaline, which is condensed with lower alkyl ester of 2-(4'- hydroxyphenoxy)propionic acid by heating under reflux to afford a lower alkyl ester of formula. Hydrolysis of this lower alkyl ester gives a carboxylic acid of formula.
