To maintain a power generation state at the output point and rotational speed with which an engine can obtain maximum operational efficiency, in a railcar drive device of a series hybrid system.
This drive device is provided with the engine 1, a generator 2, a converter 3, a system unification control portion 9, an engine control portion 19, a constant power controller 20, and a PMW control portion 21. The control portion 19 control the engine 1 by outputting a fuel injection amount command F_eng based on a command Se of the output P_eng of the engine 1 from the unification control portion 9. The PMW controller 21 gives a gate signal GP of switching elements, which generates load capacity P_gen of the generator 2 based on a command Sc of the load capacity P_gen of the generator 2 from the unification control portion 9. The output characteristics to the rotational speed of the engine 1 is configured to decrease the output P_eng when the rotational speed increases more than a specified rotational speed and to increase the output when the speed decreases. The output command Sc to the converter 3 performs constant power generation control that makes the load capacity P_gen of the generator 2 constant irrespective of the rotational speed.
