To provide a recording medium and a recording and reproducing apparatus wherein label printing can be suitably performed in the optimum printing mode even if a label printing surface is diversified.
When a disk is loaded, print management information recorded in a lead-in region is read out and classification of the label printing surface is discriminated. When the label printing surface is a thermal rewritable type, a printer unit 80 is driven by a printer driving circuit 115 to perform thermosensitive printing of a label on the label printing surface. When the label printing surface is a laser marker type, an optical pickup 105 is driven by a laser driving circuit 104 to perform thermosensitive printing or thermal deformation printing of the label on the label printing surface. When the label printing surface is not the thermal rewritable type nor the laser marker type, the label printing is ended as an unprintable matter.
