Title:
RECOVERING MAGNESIUM FROM MAGNESIUM AND MONOOOXIDE CARBON MIXTURE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS532315
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
Magnesium is recovered from a hot gaseous mixt. of Mg and Co (such as the prod. stream resulting from the redn. of MgO with carbon at >1000 degrees C), by rapidly cooling the gas in contact with a molten aluminium-magnesium alloy which simultaneously dissolves the Mg. Pref. the alloy contains >=25 wt.% esp. 30-70 wt.% Mg so that the m. pt. is as low as possible (e.g. the alloy contg. 35% Mg is fully molten at 450 degrees C). Recovery of Mg is increased if the alloy has the biggest possible surface area, which is achieved e.g. by spraying the molten alloy into the hot gas stream in the form of droplets. Process gives good recovery of Mg before it recombines with the CO to form MgO+C. The use of Mg/Al alloy is an improvement on the molten Pb or Sn previously used, since it avoids the necessity of recovering Mg from the Mg/Pb or Mg/Sn alloys, which themselves have little commercial application. The Mg is easily recovered from the Mg/Al alloy e.g. by distn.
