To recover fluorene, a starting chemical, through a simple process, by treating a crude product including fluorene and specific two compounds with a specific alcohol.
A crude product including (A) fluorene, (B) a diol of formula I (R1 and R2 are each a 1-8C alkylene) and (C) a compound of formula II (R3 is a 1-8C alkylene) is treated with (D) a 1-4C alcohol to recover the component A. As a component D, is cited methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol and the like. The amount of the component D to be used in this treatment is preferably about 5-300-fold, more preferably 10-100-fold weight of the crude product. The component A is recovered, for example, by dissolving the crude product in the component D, cooling the solution to precipitate the component A, filtering the precipitated component A and drying it, when needed.
