Abstract:

To provide a reflection type liquid crystal device with which bright display can be realized and which has excellent contrast and display quality.

A reflection type liquid crystal device 10 displays images by switching a liquid crystal layer into a uniform state or a focal conic state. A reflection type hologram color filter 22 provided with hologram elements 22R, 22G and 22B which transmit light made incident from the direction nearly equal to the incidence direction of light made incident on an element substrate 30 and which reflect light of a specific wavelength made incident to the liquid crystal layer and diffracted by the liquid crystal layer when the liquid crystal layer is in the focal conic state is formed on the liquid crystal layer side of a counter substrate 20 positioned on the side opposite to a light incident side among a pair of substrates disposed opposite to each other having the liquid crystal layer interposed there between, and a light absorbing body 24 is formed on the side opposite to the light incident side of the reflection type hologram color filter 22.
