The reflective display device has a transparent display panel 20 into which light 18 is to be introduced, a driving section 24 which is provided oppositely to the back surface of the display panel 20, and in which actuator elements 22 corresponding to the large number of picture elements, a picture element assembly 30 which is provided on each actuator element 22, and has a light-reflecting layer 50 and a color filter 52, and a light-absorptive material 14 filled between the display panel 20 and an actuator substrate 32. The actuator elements 22 are selectively driven according to the attribute of an inputted image signal for controlling displacement of the picture element assembly (30) in a direction approaching or separating from the display panel 20. Thereby, light absorbability and/or light reflection between the display panel 20 and the picture element assembly 30 are controlled so that a screen image corresponding to the image signal is displayed on the display panel 20.
