To provide a refrigerator whose high voltage application part is prevented from dielectric breakdown due to the entry of moisture in a preserving method for holding freshness while suppressing the breathing of vegetable with the application of an electric field to the vegetable.
A pair of electrode units 1 each have a connection part 5 between an electrode plate 4 and a high voltage power supply 2 for generating high voltage, and the electrode plate 4, both of which are covered with an insulating material 6. They are arranged in a vegetable chamber 14 of the refrigerator. A control part 7 controls the application of voltage to the electrode plate 4 for electric field treatment to preserve vegetable 16 in electric field environment, thus maintaining freshness while suppressing the breathing of the vegetable 16.
