Title:
REGULATION OF REACTIVITY OF HUMAN BLOOD PLATELET BY PERORAL ADMINISTRATION OF EXTRACT FROM MARITIME PINE (PYCNOGENOL (R))
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH09278663
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To regulate the reactivity of human blood platelets by administering an extract of a maritime pine to a human. SOLUTION: An extract from a tree bark of a maritime pine [called Pycnogenol (R)] in-a daily dose of 200-500mg, preferably 250-350 mg and in a dose of 50-150mg at a time is perorally administered to a human. The promoted reactivities of blood platelets can be normalized without causing noxious actions related to the ingestion of acetylsalicylic acid which is a well-known blood platelet aggregation inhibitor and without affecting especially the hemorrhagic time. In addition, the blood platelet aggregation induced by adrenaline can be inhibited even in the reactivities of the blood platelet induced by smoking to regulate the reactivities of the blood platelets. When the Pycnogenol (R) is ingested simultaneously with a meal, adverse effects such as gastroenteric disorder are not caused. The extract is obtained by extracting the pulverized tree bark of the maritime pine with boiling water, saturating the resultant extract with sodium chloride or adding ammonium sulfate thereto, separating the formed precipitate and repetitively extracting the precipitate with ethyl acetate, drying and concentrating the prepared extract.
