PURPOSE: To enable erasure over a wide region by providing a reversible thermal recording layer composed of a resin matrix containing two kinds of org. monomeric substances performing different actions in the resin matrix on a support.
CONSTITUTION: A coating soln. for a reversible thermal recording layer is prepared by dissolving a resin matrix, an org. monomeric substance A partially insoluble in the resin matrix and generating phase separation in the resin matrix and an org. monomeric substance B dissolved in the resin matrix in a predetermined solvent. This coating soln. is applied to a support such as a metal reflecting base material and dried to form a reversible thermal recording layer to form a reversible thermal recording medium. The org. monomeric substance B imparts order to the molten org. monomeric substance A within a temp. range T1-T2 (wherein T1 is the m.p. of the substance A in the resin matrix and T2 is the m.p. of the substance B in the resin matrix). As a concrete example of the org. monomeric substance A, there is an aliphatic ketone compd. with an m.p. of 50°C or higher and, as a concrete example of the org. monomeric substance B, there is sulfide or aliphatic dicarboxylic acid.
