PURPOSE:To improve inflow property at the start of opening in a rotary valve having a slide face for choking suction and exhaust passages by forming a penetration hole so that at least one end thereof related to initial valve opening will have a rectangular section. CONSTITUTION:A housing part 18 formed in suction and exhaust passages near combustion chamber side houses a rotary valve 23, which is rotatably retained on both seat members 21 and 22. And the rotary valve 23 is provided with a spherical valve body 24 and the peripheral surface excluding the penetration hole 25 of the valve body 24 and the connection part thereof forms a slide face. In this case, the penetration hole 25 running through the center of the valve body 24 is made to have an approximately square section. In this state, when the rotary valve 23 opens, the area of an opening part formed by the penetration hole 25 and the inner diameters of both seat members 21 and 22 fluctuates depending upon the oscillation of the rotary valve 23. In this case, as the sectional form of the penetration hole 25 is rectangular, an opening area can be made larger and the inflow property can be improved, respectively at the start of valve opening.
