PURPOSE: To make repeated quick charge possible by using a three-dimensional supporter in a negative electrode comprising a hydrogen storage alloy and its supporter.
CONSTITUTION: A water repellent, three-dimensional supporter is used in a negative electrode mainly comprising a hydrogen storage alloy 2 capable of electrochemically absorbing and desorbing hydrogen which is an active material and its supporter. Since water repellency is given to the surface of the hydrogen storage alloy 2 powder in contact with the supporter, hydrogen gas evolved in quick charge reaction is smoothly absorbed by gas phase reaction into the hydrogen storage alloy 2, and an increase in the internal pressure of a battery is prevented. Since the hydrogen storage alloy 2 powder is held in the three- dimensional porous body having water repellency, mechanical strength is increased. Increase in the internal pressure of the battery caused by charge- discharge cycles is retarded.
