To improve the accuracy for identifying a graphic to be selected and designated by calculating a feature point that is adaptive to the selected and designated graphic and extracting an item area including the feature point to identify a prescribed item.
A computer 1 scans a form 10 that is set on a scanner 9, reads respective selected graphics, sets a circumscribed rectangle including the image data to the read graphic form a reference point and the X and Y coordinates and calculates a coordinate position being an adaptive feature point. The calculated coordinate position is compared with the coordinate area of a set item area of the item definition information, and an item area including a part or the whole of the circumscribed rectangle area is extracted. It is judged whether or not only one extracted item area exists. If only one extracted item area exists, the existence of selection and indication is identified for the relevant item.
