PURPOSE: To enable retaining a web tail end edge, separated without using a vacuum device, on the surface of a main take-up drum over a prescribed section thereof, and improve the quality of a take-up product, by arranging a large number of hooks used to hook the web tail end edge, in a groove of the surface of the main take-up drum.
CONSTITUTION: At a selected point of time during synchronous rotation of a main take-up drum 5 to a web separation roll 10, a web separator 11 is caused to rush into a groove 12, and a web 1 is torn and separated by a rigid member 13. Within the groove 12, hooks 22 are so mounted that their tooth edges may project into it. The tooth edges of the hooks 22 are so arranged as to direct in a reverse direction to the rotational direction of the main take-up drum 5. Accordingly, a tail end edge 1b of the separated web 1 is retained in a condition of being engaged on a large number of hooks 22 by a pulling force having theretofore acted on the web 1. When the main take-up drum 5 is further rotated by a suitable amount, the tail end edge 1b is disengaged by receiving a force causing the tail end edge to be disengaged from the hooks 22.
