To obtain a separating agent which has a high separating capacity and is superior in strength and stability by employing particles of poly-α-amino acid and the like made by emulsion polymerization or heterogeneous polymerization of α-amino acid-N-carbonic anhydride.
An α-amino acid-N-carbonic anhydride such as glutamic acid, aspartic acid and the like is used. Then, emulsion polymerization is carried out in water containing a polymerization starting agent such as methyl amine, ethylenediamine and the like and an emulsifying agent such as nonion emulsifier. Heterogeneous polymerization is carried out in an organic medium having a solubility of a-amino acid-N-carbonate anhydride not more than a specified value and containing not more than a specified content of polyamino acid produced. Such emulsion polymerization or heterogeneous polymerization of the α-amino acid-N-carbonic acid anhydride is carried out to produce polyamino acid particles having a small particle size distribution. The polyamino acid thus obtained has a high separating performance and is superior in mechanical strength and chemical stability so that it can be applied to separation and refining of a variety of substances.
