To provide a shearing and joining method and apparatus for a metallic strip which make it easy and accurate to position each shearing section of a metallic strip and which enable joining highly efficient and at high yield rate.

In a shearing and joining method which join each shearing section after cutting each tail end of a preceding material conveyed along the line and each leading end of a succeeding material on the line placed in series by a shearing machine and a joining machine, the tail end of the preceding material is fed to the position of the shearing machine on the line for cutting and a shearing space for the succeeding material is secured by holding the tail end upward or downward the path line, without shifting the preceding material in the flying direction and then the leading end of the succeeding material is moved to the position of the shearing machine for cutting. Then, the tail end of the preceding material is restored to the path line from the holding position and the matching section of the tail end cutting section of the preceding material is fixed so that the shearing machine is evacuated from this matching section and concurrently, the joining machine is relocated in the matching section for joining.
