PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound, having a high nematic-isotropic transition temperature and a great refractive index anisotropy and effectively usable as an on-vehicle liquid crystal panel composition, etc.
CONSTITUTION: This compound of formula I [R is a 1-10C linear alkyl or a 1-10C fluoroalkyl in which 1 or 2 H atoms thereof are substituted with F, a 3-8C branched chain alkyl, etc.; formula II is trans-1(or 4)-sila-1,4-cyclohexylene in which Si at the 1- or the 4-position has a substituent group of H, F, Cl or CH3; L1 and L2 are each H or F; L3 and L4 are each H, F or Cl; (n) is 0, 1 or 2; X is H, CN, F, etc.], e.g. 4-(trans-4-n-pentyl-4-silacyclohexyl)-4"- fluoroterphenyl. The compound is obtained by carrying out the reaction for forming C-Si bond including reaction for removing MQ of an oreganometallic reagent of the formula R-M [M is MgP (P is a halogen), ZnP or Li] with a silacyclohexane compound of formula III (W is H, F, Cl or CH3; Q is a halogen or an alkoxy).
