PURPOSE: To obtain a sensitive material hardly lowering the sensitivity even when the amt. of a replenisher is reduced at the time of development by chemically sensitizing the silver halide of a sensitive material subjected to rapid processing with a selenium compd.

CONSTITUTION: The silver halide of a sensitive material subjected to rapid processing with a developing soln. contg. ≥6g/l KBr and ≤25g/l hydroquinone for ≤11sec developing time is chemically sensitized with a selenium compd. and at least one kind of compd. represented by formula I is preferably incorporated into a silver halide emulsion layer or other hydrophilic colloidal layer permeable to water through the emulsion layer. In the formula I, Z is a hetero ring having at least one group selected among -SO3M, -COOR1, -OH and -NHR2, M is H, an alkali metal atom, etc., R1 is H, an alkali metal atom or 1-6C alkyl and R2 is H, 1-6C alkyl, etc.
