To obtain a silver halide photographic emulsion having a high silver chloride content and high in contrast by incorporating specified silver halide grains formed in the presence of a specified compound and using a developing solution containing ascorbic acid.
The silver halide emulsion contains the silver halide grains comprising ≥50mol% silver chloride (111) occupying ≥30% of the surface of the grains. The grain is formed in the presence of the compound represented by formula I, II, or, III, and contains a 6-cyano complex on a local concentration of 1×10-5mol per 1mol of silver halide in the uppermost layer. The photosensitive material is processed with the developing solution containing the ascorbic acid or its derivative. In formula I, R1 is an alkyl or alkenyl group or the like; each of R12-R6 is an H atom or a substituent; and X- is a counter anion, and in formulae II and III, each of A1-A4 is a nonmetallic atomic group necessary to complete an N-containing hetero ring; B is a divalent bounding group; each of R1 and R2 is an alkyl group; and X- is an anion.
