PURPOSE: To obtain a sintered metal mold having a cooling path along the vicinity of the surface of the mold and put to practical use by forming a cavity for cooling with an inner wall deposited by the infiltration of an infiltrating material.
CONSTITUTION: A first infiltrating material similar in shape to a cooling path is set at a position at which the cooling path is formed in a metal mold and iron-based metal powder is filled under vibration to form a filled layer. A second infiltrating material is put on the filled layer and the casting mold, the iron- based metal powder, the first and the second infiltrating materials are heated to the sintering temp. of the iron-based metal powder. Sintering and infiltration are accelerated and a sintered metal mold having the desired cooling path is obtd. The surface of the mold is made uniform and flat and the mold having superior cooling ability is obtd. in a short infiltration time. The first and the second infiltrating materials are required only to melt at the sintering temp. of the iron-based metal powder or below and they may be made of the same material.
