Abstract:

PURPOSE: To prevent the intrusion of slag, etc. into the molten metal to be poured into a casting mold in a tundish for vacuum induction melting by covering a nozzle hole with a refractory brick cap prior to pouring.

CONSTITUTION: A high-alloy steel is refined and melted by Al deoxidation by using, for example, a CaO-CaF2 flux in a vacuum induction melting furnace and thereafter the nozzle hole 2 of the tundish 1 is covered with the cap 3 made of the calcareous refractory brick piece having about 2.8 specific bulk density. The intrusion of the flux into an ingot does not arise when the ingot is thereafter cast by pouring the molten metal into the tundish 1.
