To solidify water-containing sludge in a short time into treated sludge of high strength by adding a sludge treating agent in which inorganic powder is mixed with an alkali metal salt of carboxymethyl cellulose in a specified ratio into the water-containing sludge.
A sludge treating agent is prepared by mixing 100 pts.wt. of an alkali metal salt of carboxymethyl cellulose with 5-200 pts.wt. of inorganic powder. In the alkali metal salt, the viscosity at 25°C of the 1 wt.% aqueous solution is 10-15,000 mPa.s, and the degree of substitution is 0.4-1.6. Into 100 pts.wt. of sludge, 1-100 pts.wt. of vegetable powder and 0.1-5, 0.2-4, or 2.5-4 pts.wt. of the agent are added/mixed. Water in the sludge can be absorbed in the vegetable powder, and the sludge can be reinforced by the powder so that treated sludge easy of handling, recycling, and disposal is obtained.
