To provide an optical amplifier which is small in size, high in degree of amplification, and easily handled and to provide a method of manufacturing the same.
A plurality of amplifying fibers and a plurality of signal couplers are used together with the amplifying fibers, and each have a mirror-finished end face that forms an angle of 45° with its axial direction and a function to transmit signals to the other signal coupler through mirrors. The fibers and the couplers are sealed up in a light transmitting resin unit. Signals are reflected back by the mirrors so as to be increased in propagation distance and improved in degree of amplification in an amplification unit. As the optical amplification unit is sealed up with resin, its signal-coupling parts are kept high in reliability and weather resistance, and the optical amplification unit that is easily handled can be obtained.
