To provide a spacer for use in a flat display device that can reduce relative luminance changes in pixels along the spacer, and a flat display device incorporating the spacer.
The spacer 140 is used in the flat display device joining a first panel and a second panel along their peripheral portions and holding the space between the first panel and the second panel under vacuum, and is positioned between the first panel and the second panel. The spacer 140 comprises a spacer base 140A and antistatic films 140B formed on sides of the spacer base 140A. The antistatic films 140B comprise (A) at least one kind of metal oxide selected from the group consisting of chromium oxide, manganese oxide and zinc oxide and (B) at least one kind of metal oxide selected from the group consisting of titanium oxide and indium oxide.
