PURPOSE: To provide a spare tire holding device which can hold and remove a spare tire easily, and at the same time, can prevent a burglary of the spare tire, by providing a connecting mechanism which regulates the lateral rotation of a tire carrier and holds it in the longitudinal condition in a normal condition, and can release the regulation, between the installing side and the tire carrier.

CONSTITUTION: A tire carrier 4 holding a spare tire 2 in the standing condition to a holder 3 at the position close to the back door 1 of a vehicle is rotated horizontally in the retreating direction, and then, it can be rotated in the lateral direction as the holder 3 faces to the ground surface, and by winding back the cord 6 of a winding machine 7 provided to the tire carrier 4 under such a condition, the spare tire 2 connected to the cord 6 is separated from the holder 3, and it can be hung down to the ground surface as it is, following the winding back operation. Furthermore, since a locking mechanism 25 regulating the rotation of the tire carrier 4 can be unlocked only by a special key, no person other than the owner of this special key can remove the spare tire.
