To provide a steering device for a vehicle excellent in an energy conservation property by accurately determining a vehicle state, and appropriately performing lock ON by a simple method.
A steering device for a vehicle in this embodiment is constituted by comprising vehicle state determination means for determining a vehicle state from a steering angle, steering torque, and vehicle speed. Then, when the vehicle state determination means for determining the vehicle state is determined at least as during stop, or at a direct advance state, since it is unnecessary to actuate a transmission ratio variable device, the steering device for the vehicle is constituted to make a lock mechanism into a lock state. As a result, when the vehicle state is determined at least as during the stop, or at the direct advance state, it is unnecessary to excite solenoid of a lock device since the lock mechanism is made into the lock state. Namely, at the vehicle state that it is unnecessary to excite the lock device, an energy saving property is improved by appropriately performing lock ON.
