NEW MATERIAL:A compound selected from a substituted cyclohexadione derivative of formula I [R1 is alkyl, phenyl, aralkyl or heterocyclic group; Y is alkylene; (m) is 0 or 1; R2 is H or alkyl; R3 is halogen, cyano, alkyl, haloalkyl, phenyl, etc.; (n) is 0-5; Z1 is W (W is halogen, etc.) or OR9 (R9 is alkyl); Z2 is SR6 (R6 is phenyl, etc.), OR9 or Z1 and Z2 together form O, etc.], its salt, enamine or its analog, acylate, sulfonate, carbamate and ether derivative.

EXAMPLE: 5-(α-Chlorophenylthiomethyl)-2-(2-nitro-4-chlorobenzoyl)cyclohexane-1,3- dione.

USE: A herbicide.

PREPARATION: The compound of formula III (a compound of formula I wherein Z1 and Z2 are OR9) can be produced e.g. by selectively oxidizing a compound of formula II.
