To efficiently perform retrieval to make a user interface user-friendly when retrieving similar images.
A similar image retrieval system includes an imaging apparatus which picks up an image, a recording device which stores and retrieves a picked up image, and a terminal device by which a user specifies retrieval. The recording device retrieves an image similar to the key image which user specifies by extracting a feature quantity of the image and evaluating the feature quantity. The user gives keywords such as a name and a feature of people to a result of similar image retrieval. Two types of retrieval methods are prepared in the image retrieval, that is, similar image retrieval which excludes the image to which the keyword is given from the object of retrieval, and appearance event retrieval which allows only the keyword-given image as the object of retrieval. The user performs appearance event retrieval after performing similar image retrieval a plurality of times and determining that keywords have been given to adequate many images.
