To provide a magnetic recording medium capable of being used as a master tape in a high-speed magnetic copying process and capable of introducing the production of many high-quality copy tapes.
The tape-like magnetic recording medium includes a flexible base material having the thickness of at least 15 μm and at least one magnetic layer disposed on one surface of the base material. The magnetic layer has the thickness of at least 3 μm, in which a fine magnetic powder is embedded in a polymer binder. Further, the magnetic layer has the surface porosity rate SSP of at least 80 cm2/cm2 (where, SSP is the value of the product of thickness dM (cm) of the magnetic layer multiplied by a specific surface area (cm2/cm3) of the magnetic layer calculated from the nitrogen absorption amount per unit volume by the BET method). The tape-like magnetic recording medium is used as the master tape in the magnetic copying process.
