Abstract:

PURPOSE: To simply control the temp. of a cold trap for Na, etc. for a reactor by using a low b.p. heat medium and varying the b.p. of the medium with a flow control valve.

CONSTITUTION: Cold trap 1 in which liquid metal such as Na is purified and condenser 8 are connected, forming a closed loop. A low b.p. heat medium is circulated through the loop. Medium 12 is heat exchanged for Na in vessel 7 to be evaporated to vapor phase and the Na is cooled with the heat of evaporation. Evaporated medium 13 is cooled in condenser 8 to be liquefied. The liquefied medium is then returned to vessel 7 while the flow rate is being regulated by flow control valve 11. As the opening of valve 11 is widened, the b.p. of the medium loweres, accelerating cooling of the trap. Thus, the set temp. of the trap can be held at a low level. In order to raise the set temp., valve 11 is reduced.
