To provide a thermal printer by which excellent printing quality can be obtained by corresponding to the combinations of various thermal transferring ink ribbons and receptive papers.

The thermal printer has an ink ribbon specifying section 13 specifying the type of the thermal transferring ribbon 24, a receptive paper specifying section 14 specifying the type of the receptive paper 21, a temperature measuring section 36 measuring the temperature around a thermal head 27, a group table 15 grouping the combinations of the type of the thermal transferring ribbons and the type of the receptive paper, and a thermal energy table 16 storing the thermal energy quantities and surrounding temperatures correlating the same for every grouped group in association with each other. A control section 10 refers to the group table 15 and the thermal energy table 16 based on the combinations of the specified type of the thermal transferring ink ribbons and the type of the receptive paper, obtains the thermal energy quantity corresponding to the surrounding temperature measured by the temperature measuring section 36, and applies the thermal energy to the thermal transferring ribbon from the thermal head 27.
