PURPOSE: To provide a novel compound useful as an aldose reductase inhibitor.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 is 1-7C alkyl, 4-7C cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl, phenyl, naphthyl; R2 is H, l-7C alkyl, benzyl; n is 0 to 4), for example, 2-carboxymethylthio-4-benzylidene-2-thiazolin-5-one. The compound of formula I is obtained by condensation reaction between a compound of formula II and another compound of R1-CHO in the presence of a catalyst such as sodium acetate followed by reaction of the product of formula III with a compound of X(CH2)nCOOR2 (X is halogen) in a solvent such as THF. The compounds according to the present invention can be used as a prophylactic or therapeutic agent for complicated diseases with chronic diabetes such as circulative disorder, renal disorder, retinopathy, diabetic cataract, neuropathy, infectious diseases in which aldose reductase-relating complications such as neuropathy, or retinopathy such as ureteropathy.
