Abstract:
PURPOSE: To prepare an isoindolinone derivative useful as an intermediate of dyes and pigments, under atmospheric pressure, in high yield and purity, by reacting phthalic acid or its derivative with urea in the presence of a catalyst having particular particle size.
CONSTITUTION: An isoindolinone derivative is prepared by reacting phthalic acid or its derivative (e.g. tetrachlorophthalic anhydride, tetrachlorophthalimide, etc.) with urea, using a catalyst (e.g. ammonium molybdate) having particle diameter of about ≤0.1μ, preferably about 0.001W0.1μ. The amount of the catalyst is about 0.00005W0.005mol per 1mol of phthalic acid. The reaction temperature is about 130W170°C. The yield reaches about 85W95%.
