Abstract:

PURPOSE: To easily and efficiently produce a composite material of a desired shape and size contg. very fine acicular and granular compds. uniformly deposited in an Al alloy.

CONSTITUTION: A molten Al alloy 12 having 1-10wt.% Ti content at ≥1,100°C is prepd. and fine SiC powder 14 is added to the molten Al alloy 12 by 1-10wt.% of the amt. of the Al alloy. They are mixed and the resulting molten Al alloy 16 contg. SiC powder is slowly cooled, poured into a casting mold 18 and solidified by cooling to produce the objective composite material of a desired shape and size contg. a fine acicular Ti-Al intermetallic compd. and granular TiC deposited and uniformly dispersed in the Al alloy matrix.
