Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL:Optical active or racemic 7-acetyl-3-ethyl-1,1,4,4,6-pentamethyl-1, 2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene shown by the formulaI.
USE: A synthetic musk having a musk odor.
PROCESS: A compound shown by the formula II is reduced with a metal hydride to convert COOH into CH2OH, which is halogenated and subjected to hydrogenolysis, to give a compound shown by the formula III. This compound is reacted with an acetylating agent such as acetyl chloride, ketene, etc. in the presence of an acylating catalyst (e.g., AlCl3) of Friedel-Craft, to give a compound shown by the formulaI.
