PURPOSE: To control the saturation of a specific hue in a color difference signal by synthesizing a signal obtained by amplifying the saturation of the specific hue with either one of two color difference signals obtained before the conversion of coordinate axes.
CONSTITUTION: In saturation control circuit 55, a coordinate axis of the orthogonal coordinates of a chrominance signal consisting of two color difference signals R-Y 106, B-Y 107 is converted. A negative part deleting circuit 101 deletes the negativepart signal output of one color difference signal R-Y 108 out of the two color difference signals obtained after coordinate axis conversion, a saturation of a specific hue in the output signal of the circuit 101 is amplified by using information (111) indicating the absolute value of the output side of the other color difference signal B-Y 109. A signal 113 obtained by amplifying the saturation of the specific hue and the signal 106 being one of the two color difference signals before coordinate conversion is synthesized to obtain a color difference signal R-Y 114 in which the saturation of the specific hue is amplified.
