Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide the nonlinear optical element having high characteristics by dispersing a carbon cluster compd. C60 into a high polymer or arom. compd. thereby forming a composite.

CONSTITUTION: Fullerene recently discovered as the allotrope of the carbon cluster compd. has a cage-shaped molecular structure and is an extremely stable compd. Among such compds., C60 has a soccer ball-shaped molecular structure and has the structure suitable for a π conjugation system in obtaining cubic linearity. However, the C60 alone lacks physical and chemical stability as the element to be used as a nonlinear optical material and is, therefore, used as the composite by being dispersed into a high-polymer compd. or arm. compd. The high-polymer materials usable as media include many high-polymer materials, such as polymethyl methacrylate and polystyrene. The arom. compd. is exemplified by metal phthalocyanine, metal porphyrin, etc.
