PURPOSE: To produce an Al/AlN composite material having a Young's modulus of specified value and to provide a method for producing the same.
CONSTITUTION: This Al/AlN composite material is the one in which granular or acicular AlN occuping 40 to 90volume% in a matrix essentially consisting of Al, and having ≤1μm diameter is dispersedly held. Since this AIN is extremely fine, it is more integrated with Al in the matrix. Thus, it has high rigidity corresponding to the ratio of the plasticity of the AlN, and its plastic workability and machinability are also good. Moreover, it is small in attackability against the mating material at the time of sliding and is suitable as the sliding material. This Al/AlN composite material can be obtd. by subjecting fine Al to nitriding at the m.p. of the Al or below.
