PURPOSE: To obtain a xanthine deriv. which prolongs the interruption time of blood flowing, improves a syndrome after interruption of the blood flowing and the following restoration of the blood flowing and is suitable for suppressing a change in the internal pressure in an in vivo part.
CONSTITUTION: A compd. of formula I [where at least one of R1 and R3 is a group of formula II [where R4 is a 1-3C alkyl; and (n) is 2-5] and the other is H or a 1-6C aliphatic hydrocarbon group, R5 which may be interrupted by 1-2 oxygen atoms or substd. by oxo or 1-2 OH groups; and R2 is a 1-4C alkyl], e.g. 7-ethoxymethyl-1-(5-hydroxy-5-methylhexyl)-3-methylxanthine is used in the preparation of pharmaceuticals for the prophylaxis and treatment of muscle damage which may occur after interruption of blood circulation. The compd. of formula I is obtd. by allowing a compd. of formula III (where A is H, R5 or a group of formula II; B is H, R5, benzyl or diphenylmethyl; and at least one of A and B is H) to react with a compd. of the formula X-Q (where X is a halogen, a sulfonic ester or the like; and Q is a group of formula II, R5, benzyl or diphenylmethyl) in the presence of a basic condensing agent.
