The suspension system permits elimination of large, heavy load bearing structures in remote areas of the vehicle, use of a compact, modular structure, and combination of suspension geometry control and spring/damping in one unit. The modular suspension system for a wheeled vehicle includes a wheel and hub assembly, a relatively heavier vehicle body, an interposed energy storage medium, and a mechanism to releasably store energy in the medium upon relative movement between the wheel and hub assembly and the vehicle body.
