PURPOSE: To provide the process for production of the substrate for a magnetic disk which hardly generates a head crash even if the floating height of the magnetic head is set low.
CONSTITUTION: A disk-shaped substrate 10 on which hardened layers 11 are formed, is rotated and while an aq. soln. (working fluid 30) at least incorporating grinding abrasive grains of uniform grain sizes and a surfactant is supplied to the surfaces of these hardened layers, working cloth 2 having the Vickers hardness lower than the Vickers hardness of the hardened layers 11 is brought into pressurized contact with the hardened layers 11. The grinding abrasive grains interposed between the hardened layers 11 and the working cloth 2 are respectively made to penetrate into both surfaces of the hardened layers 11 and the working cloth 2 by the depth corresponding to the ratio of the Vickers hardnesses thereof to form fine texture grooves on the surfaces of the hardened layers. The penetration quantity of the grinding abrasive grains into the hardened layers is maintained approximately constant even if the pressurized contact force of the working cloth to the hardened layers fluctuates to some extent during texturing and, therefore, the good texture grooves having the proper depth and uniform depth are easily formed.
