Abstract:

PURPOSE: To conveniently and easily produce a dense Ti-Al intermetallic compd. with an ordinary sintering technology by mixing a Ti powder or a Ti hydride powder and an Al mother alloy powder in a specified ratio, compacting the mixture and then sintering the compact.

CONSTITUTION: An intermetallic compd. TiAl or Ti3Al or their two-phase intermetallic compd. TiAl/Ti3Al is produced from a metal or alloy powder. In this case, A Ti powder or a Ti hydride powder and an Al mother alloy contg. 30-70mass% of Ti are mixed to obtain a specified intermetallic compd. composition which is compacted. When the hydride is used, the mixture is dehydrogenated before or after compacting. The compact is sintered preferably in vacuum or in an inert gas atmosphere at about 1200-1500°C. The sintered material is compressed, at need, at ordinary temp. or high temp. to remove the void remaining in the material. A dense and tough sintered material having a density of ≥95% of the vacuum is obtained in this way without adopting a high temp. compression method.
