PURPOSE: To obtain the titled electrode showing superior resistance to corrosion by various components in molten glass and having a long endurance life by forming a molybdenum electrode so that the recrystallized grains of molybdenum produced at the melting temp. of glass are provided with a specified structure.
CONSTITUTION: A molybdenum electrode for melting glass is formed so that the recrystallized grains of molybdenum produced at the melting temp. of glass are arranged in layers in the axial direction while bringing the grain boundaries into contact with each other and have a shape satisfying equations L/W>3 and L+W/2>50μ [where L is the length (μm) in the zxial direction, and W is the width (μm) in a direction perpendicular to the axial direction]. Said electrode can be manufactured by suitably selecting the average particle size of fine molybdenum powder as a starting material, the amount of a dopant added, molding conditions, sintering conditions and the reduction of area during rotary swaging. The reduction of area is an especially important factor, and it is preferable that the total reduction of area is regulated to ≥ about 85%.
